Environmental Awards

Sunflower Electric Power Corporation has achieved numerous environmental awards over the years. We take pride in our environmental stewardship efforts and programs, some of which are described below:

  • 2005 Technology Achievement Award by the Electric Power Research Institute for the Mercury Control Project for "Championing the successful completion of the activated carbon injection mercury control project at Sunflower Electric Corporation Holcomb Station."
  • One of the first utilities to meet the Governor's goal of having 10% of peak generation supplied by wind by 2010 (3 years ahead of schedule).
  • KWEA (Kansas Water Environmental Association) Plant Award received in 1995, 1997, and 1998.
  • Participant in the 2000 low NOx burner tests in an effort to reduce emissions of oxide, which eventually led to new burner technology used to produce cleaner emissions.
  • Participant in 2003 carbon activated lime injection studies, which lead to reduced mercury emissions by 85%.
  • No EPA violations since 1988.
  • Holcomb Station operates below permitted emissions levels and has had a superior record of operation for the last 25 years.
