Sand Sage Prairie

One of the most interesting features of Holcomb Station is the land itself.  Surrounding the plant is the third largest area of Sandsage Prairie, a rare ecosystem that together with our Members we have made a thriving habitat. The two other areas that are larger than the Sunflower site are located within 75 miles of the power plant.

Preservation of the sandsage prairie has always been a priority for Sunflower. Cattle graze the land, but a careful management of that activity (based on plans developed by Fort Hays State University) preserves the delicate ecosystem that keeps the prairie from turning into sand dunes. Today native grasses and other brush continue to encourage native wildlife to make it their home.
