About the Cooperative Action Network
The Cooperative Action Network is the grassroots hub of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA). It’s more important than ever to band together and promote common sense solutions to the problems facing our nation. Members of Congress work for you, and they need to hear your stories.
Join our growing grassroots army today and become part of our team of advocates, as we fight to promote the importance of electric cooperatives across the nation.
The NRECA is the national service organization for more than 900 rural electric cooperatives that provide electricity to one in eight Americans across 48 states and 56 percent of the nation’s landmass.
Election Hot Topics
Rural Utilities Service (RUS) Electric Loan Program
Consumer-owned, not-for-profit electric cooperatives maintain nearly half the nation’s electric distribution lines which cover 75 percent of America’s land mass while serving only 12 percent of all business and residential electric consumers. Cooperatives meet that unique challenge in part by using RUS loans to finance affordable, reliable electric service to approximately 42 million people. More than 500 electric co-ops in 41 states hold outstanding RUS debt. Repricing these loans without penalty would provide longer-term support for electric cooperatives and help manage consumer electric bills during this difficult economic period.
Protect Power Marketing Administrations and TVA
More than 600 co-ops in 34 states are customers of the Department of Energy ‘s four Power Marketing Administrations (PMA). For this reason, NRECA is focused on ensuring that the federal hydropower infrastructure and PMA’s remain a vital part of America’s energy backbone. The PMAs are federal agencies with the responsibility to market electric power, primarily from multiple-purpose water projects operated by the Bureau of Reclamation and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Grid Security and Cyber Security
Protecting the nation’s electric power grid and ensuring an affordable, reliable and secure supply of energy are top priorities for electric cooperatives. The North American power system is an incredibly complicated machine. System owners and operators, who have the greatest expertise in responding to and mitigating threats and vulnerabilities in this complex system, are engaged across the industry and with government to plan and prepare for existing and potential threats to the reliability of electricity in our nation.
Broadband for Rural America
High-speed internet access is the gateway to the world, allowing access to greater educational opportunities for our children, job prospects that we might not otherwise have, and connectivity for the ever-growing world of smart devices. However, as each day passes without access to broadband in large parts of rural America, the digital divide widens and leaves some rural communities behind. As advocates for the nation’s rural electric cooperatives, we can make sure that federal dollars are used to support our communities in rural America that need this vital connection. Congress recently designated $600 million for use in rural broadband grants and loans. But that is just the beginning. Tell your candidates to support significant funding to help bring high speed internet access to rural America.
