Sunflower's Historic Building
Our headquarters building was originally constructed in 1931 and housed the St. Anthony Hospital. This 60-bed facility was used until 1972 when the hospital built a new facility on Canterbury Drive. A local businessman purchased the building, but it remained vacant for 10 years. In that time, the building was considered for use as a home for the elderly, a dormitory, and a high school. During the last few months of 1982, Sunflower’s board of directors made the decision to purchase the structure, raze the older wing, and utilize the east wing for its headquarters. This option was chosen over that of erecting a new building, thus saving millions of dollars. Today, all four floors of the renovated building are used for Sunflower office space. From being used as a central health care center to a corporate headquarters supplying power to cooperatives in western Kansas, the imposing red-brick building at 13th and Ash has a rich history of helping meet the needs of others.
