Sunflower's 2026 Members’ Conference, themed Powered by Purpose, brought cooperative leaders together for a day of learning, discussion, and connection centered on the future of Sunflower and our member utilities.
Throughout the conference, members received updates on key areas of the business, explored challenges and opportunities facing the energy industry, and engaged in conversations about how Sunflower and our members can continue working together to meet evolving needs.
Looking Ahead While Maintaining Reliability
As energy demand continues to grow and the industry evolves, conference discussions focused on the planning, investments, and operational strategies needed to ensure a reliable power supply for years to come.
Speakers explored efforts to strengthen generation resources, support system resilience, and maintain the infrastructure that carries power across the region. Conversations also highlighted the important role transmission plays in safely and efficiently moving electricity to our members’ communities.
Throughout the presentations, a common theme emerged: balancing long-term planning with day-to-day operations while remaining focused on providing safe, dependable, and affordable energy to members.
The Foundation Behind Every Decision
Several sessions showcased the people supporting Sunflower behind the scenes. Topics included financial stewardship, safety, supply chain management, legal guidance, risk management, employee development, and Member engagement.
While these areas may not always be visible, they play a critical role in maintaining operational excellence and positioning the organization for future success. Discussions emphasized how thoughtful planning and responsible decision-making help create stability while supporting growth and new opportunities.
Together, these efforts ensure Sunflower remains well-positioned to meet the evolving needs of its members while staying true to its cooperative mission.
More Than Presentations
In addition to the information shared throughout the day, the conference provided valuable opportunities for networking and relationship-building. Members and Sunflower employees connected during breakfast, breaks, lunch, and the closing discussion, creating space for meaningful conversations beyond the formal agenda.
“The Members' Conference provides a valuable opportunity to bring members and Sunflower employees together in one room to learn from one another, ask questions, and have meaningful conversations,” shared Annie Erbert, manager of member solutions and conference organizer. “Those face-to-face interactions strengthen trust, improve communication, and reinforce our commitment to providing world-class service to our members and those they serve.”
The conversations reinforced the strength of the cooperative model and the importance of collaboration in achieving shared goals. By bringing people together, the conference fostered discussions and relationships that will continue long after the conclusion of the event.
Powered by People and Partnerships
A recurring theme throughout the conference was the role people play in our success. Discussions highlighted organizational culture, workforce development, member support, and the partnerships helping move the organization forward.
Whether it’s operational planning, financial management, communication, or member engagement, each department contributes to a common purpose: providing value to members and the communities they serve. Sunflower's greatest strength is not found in any single facility, system, or process, but in the people and partnerships working together to serve rural Kansas.
Nolan Numrich, CEO and general manager of Western Cooperative Electric, reflected on his conference experience.
“Events like Sunflower’s Members’ Conference play a vital role in strengthening collaboration and relationships. In our day-to-day operations, it's easy to get immersed in highly technical issues and immediate priorities. This year's conference served as a much-needed reset; a valuable opportunity to step back, see the whole picture, and focus on Sunflower’s role in serving its member cooperatives. By reinforcing those connections and a shared purpose, we are better positioned to deliver the greatest value to the members at the end of the line. Stronger partnerships at the G&T level and between the distribution cooperatives directly translate into more reliable, affordable, and member-focused services for Kansas.”
A Shared Vision Forward
The conference concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session to encourage open dialogue between Members and Sunflower leadership. The discussion provided an opportunity to ask questions, share perspectives, and continue conversations sparked throughout the day.
While the topics varied, the message remained consistent. Sunflower's success depends on strong relationships, thoughtful planning, and a shared commitment to serving Members. The 2026 Members’ Conference served as both a learning opportunity and a reminder that through collaboration with our members and a focus on the future, we will continue working toward a reliable and sustainable energy future for the region.
